October was a blur—in the best possible way.
A baby shower. A week of Mimi duty while my daughter and her husband snuck away for a little beach time. A choir trip to sing at the Celebrators Conference. Volunteering for the Gaither Homecoming weekend at church. Then packing up again for my brother’s wedding in Nebraska and long, laughter-filled hours with family.
It was a month overflowing with beauty, gratitude, and exhaustion all at once.
And somewhere in the middle of it all, I realized how easily our full lives can crowd out the quiet spaces where peace grows.
Maybe you’ve been there too.
You’re doing all the right things—working hard, showing up, praying faithfully—and still wondering, Lord, when will I see the fruit?
That question led me to Philippians 4, where Paul writes:
“Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of
peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:9)
Paul doesn’t say think about peace. He says practice it.
Peace isn’t passive; it’s something we cultivate, like a rhythm we return to daily.
I grew up on the plains of eastern Colorado, where we planted winter wheat in the fall.
All through the long, cold months, the fields looked barren.
But underneath the snow, life was happening. Roots were digging deep, doing exactly what they were designed to do—rest and take hold—so that when spring came, they could rise strong.
That season of waiting wasn’t wasted; it was vital.
The cold actually triggered a process called vernalization that made the plant capable of bearing fruit later on.
Waiting on God is like that. It feels still on the surface, but below, He’s strengthening our roots—preparing us for the next season of growth.
Paul also reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13)
He wasn’t claiming superpowers; he was describing partnership.
Peace grows through dependence, not determination.
When we stop trying to manufacture results and start leaning into Christ’s strength, we trade exhaustion for endurance.
Perfection says, I have to finish this.
Grace says, Let Me finish this in you.
And that shift—from striving to surrender—is where true peace begins to take root.
God is in the business of restoration, but He rarely does it overnight.
He restores “the years the locusts have eaten” (Joel 2:25) and gives “beauty for ashes” (Isaiah 61:3)—through a process, not a shortcut.
Like winter wheat, peace grows slow so it can last long.
That slow growth is sacred. It’s where our faith muscles strengthen, where trust matures, and where gratitude takes hold.
Carry that truth with you this week whenever life feels slow or uncertain.
Peace isn’t something you earn--it’s something you practice.
Even in the waiting, even in the weary work, God is faithful.
The seed you’ve planted will sprout when the season is right.
Keep trusting the soil and the Savior who never wastes a winter.
This week, take five quiet minutes each morning to thank God for one seed you’ve planted—something unseen but entrusted to Him.
Write this truth somewhere you’ll see it often:
God is growing roots I can’t see yet.
When discouragement whispers, pause and breathe this prayer:
“Lord, help me practice peace while You work beneath the surface.”
You don’t have to have it all figured out.
You just have to stay rooted in the One who is faithful to finish what He started.
