Ever feel like your home, schedule, or even your mind is one big pile of clutter? I get it. Life has a way of stacking up—laundry piles, commitments, and even emotions. But what if you could take one small step today to tame the chaos and create more peace for yourself and your family?
When my kids were younger, we kept a couple of quick-play games in the kitchen — Dutch Blitz was a favorite. We’d play after lunch in the winter, laughing and connecting before diving back into our afternoon routines. Now, as an adult, I get the same joy from a walk with my dog and my cat (yes, my cat Marbles has FOMO and almost always joins—and if I’m honest, she brings lots of joy to the neighbors who see her trotting along). Those walks remind me how small, intentional moments of connection bring life into our days.
One of my favorite reminders about this comes from Mel Robbins’ podcast. She suggests pulling out your phone or an old photo box and letting memories spark joy, laughter, and gratitude. Sometimes what we need isn’t “more time” but a change of perspective.
Last week, I challenged you to choose one core family value. If you haven’t yet, now’s a good time. Why? Because your values influence how you use your time, money, and even the atmosphere in your home.
For example, if your family value is hospitality, that will impact your physical space and your budget. You might prioritize decluttering your living room so it feels welcoming, and you may set aside extra money for groceries or a bigger gift budget. Or if your value is health, that could mean buying organic produce, joining a gym, or carving out time for meal prep.
The point is: your budget or your décor aren’t random side projects. They’re ways of living your values out loud, in your everyday life.
Your presence is the thermostat in your home — it sets the emotional climate. If you’re tightly wound or constantly rushing, everyone feels it.
But this isn’t about hiding or denying what you feel. We don’t want to teach our kids — or ourselves — to stuff emotions. What we want is to model healthy emotional processing. A great resource for this is Dr. Caroline Leaf’s book How to Help Your Child¹. It’s designed to help parents build these skills in themselves so they can model and teach them to their kids — showing what it looks like to process feelings in a healthy way.
Sometimes, before you pick up the kids or walk in the door, you may need a quick reset:
What started as a survival move became a sacred tradition. And now? My kids look forward to it every year.
Is there something simple you’ve done—or could do—that might become a memory worth keeping?

One of the most powerful ways to simplify your holidays is to choose a word or theme for the season—a single focus that reflects what you want to feel, remember, or prioritize.
Instead of a long to-do list, try this:
✅Pause and ask: What do I need this year?
✅Peace? Presence? Rest? Wonder? Generosity?
✅Let that word guide your spending, planning, and expectations.
